Spring Arrival
This edition of our newsletter finds us surrounded with spring arrivals. One of the recent arrivals has been a Zebra foal at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, which keepers discovered with its mother during their early morning rounds, just hours after the foal had been born. The filly named Zahra, meaning flower in Swahili, was born to mother Kioni and father Tano. Both mother and foal have bonded and as Zahra has been out on exhibit from just a few hours of age, now is the perfect time to come and visit her. Read more about Zahra here.
Who's the Daddy
Four feisty Tasmanian Devil joeys recently underwent a health check and paternity test to determine who their father is. The six-month old devils are another breeding success for Taronga. Taronga and Taronga Western Plains Zoos are part of a national effort to create an insurance population of devils in zoos to safeguard against the collapse of this endangered species in the wild. Since last year, we have welcomed 21 joeys into the breeding program. Keepers are hoping that the male devil, 'Theo', is the father as this will introduce a new bloodline into the program and help ensure genetic diversity. Read more here.
Choose Wisely
Seals are struggling with lots of issues: global warming; enormous amounts of plastic waste in the oceans and over-fishing are just a few of the dangers they face. Find out how you can make a real difference by choosing sustainable seafood. Read more here.
